Zainab Abo Hussain

Visual Artist

My artistic practice is deeply rooted in the essence of Saudi identity, viewing Islamic art as a living language rather than a static relic. I believe the rigorous geometric rules and traditional structures are not constraints but creative catalysts that unlock vast contemporary horizons. My work focuses on reclaiming collective memory and the forgotten narratives of our female ancestors, transforming their daily rituals—from palm weaving to the alchemical preparation of natural dyes—into a visual tapestry that merges heritage with modernity. I utilize materials derived from our local land, such as henna, saffron, and pomegranate, to bridge the gap between science and aesthetics, echoing the intellectual legacy of the Islamic Golden Age. By reinterpreting miniatures and illuminations, I aim to create a dialogue between a magnificent past and an evolving present, ensuring our cultural legacy continues to breathe within the global contemporary art scene.
